Basic Skating
|
This video shows the very basics of first starting out on skates. It may be useful for teachers to look at before making their lesson plans. |
Games
Skating games are fairly easy to play since nearly every game involves some form of skating. Here are some of my favourite games to play on the ice:
British Bulldog
Toilet Tag (Modify rules for skating)
If you are playing hockey instead of just skating, this is a list of classic games that kids love.
Small Area Games
Here is a video on the rules of capture the flag. To modify to play on the ice, you would use the goalie creases as the "safe zone" and the red line is the half point. All the other rules are essentially the same! |

Sample Lesson Plans
There are many resources for teaching kids how to skate. It depends on how much equipment you have to use and the exact age of the kids. Below are some variations of possible lessons you could do.

Skating is something not every school gets to do. I think skating is an important skill to gain while in schools. It opens up your opportunities to play things like hockey, ringette, speed skating or figure skating. I would say that the lesson plans I have are strong. It's hard to build lesson plans when you don't know the students age or where their level of experience is but most of the time you will have a variety of experience in your class. I think I could have more games but you can almost play any game on the ice that you would in the gym with modifications. Once you figure out how to modify the games, it's easy from there.
